Dining Design
This is one of the six briefs our class was to choose from.
The brief chosen for this project is Dining Design. This means that I will be designing the stationery and advertising for the cafe, the Comfy Cove. This includes the cafe’s sign and logo, bags, takeaway boxes and to-go cups, menu, and stickers.
The overall theme and aesthetic of the cafe is portrayed by the several mood boards, which is a soft palette, comfy setup, and aesthetic illustrations.
This is the first mood board, the overall cafe's theme and aesthetic. The main focus of this is to give a visual of what the cafe might be. As the task did not include designing and creating the actual cafe, this helps a good amount when coming up with ideas and designing the cafe's stationery and advertising. A colour palette is included to give a general range of colours that will be considered and used when creating and finalising the products and advertising items.
This next mood board has been made for the brainstorming, theme and overall feel of the cafe's menu. A small selection of swatches has been included, as I felt that if more colours had been used, the menu would be a bit too overwhelming to read. It should attract one's attention, however, it should not be too harsh on one's eyes. The menu will include illustrations, photography and typography, each of which's progress will be documented here.
Next, a questionnaire was made and handed out to receive opinions on different aspects of a cafe, based on the demographics of age, level of education and gender. The following shows a summary of the results collected.
This allowed me to also figure out what certain aspects of a cafe the majority of people liked more than the others.
Along with the demographic and selection preference questions, there were also short answer questions which allowed me to evaluate the choices made further, as to why they chose it and what factors of it appeals to them the most.
Chosen cup:
The majority of votes was placed for this particular cup. The overall reason being, was that it was simple, in terms of colours and design. Others elaborated on their choices. For example, one had said that the colours were of a very minimal palette (2 colours) and that the contrast of them were incredibly eye-catching. Along with the fact that the gold against a dark and rick colour such as shown, gives a esteemed, rick coffee feel to it. On the illustrative part of it, the responders mentioned that having the gold bits in lines and drawings helps accent the cup nicely, giving a subtle charm to it.
Chosen menu:
The votes were mainly given to these two menus. Main reasons being the minimalistic aspect of it all and how easy it was to skim through the menu from a distance, an important factor of a cafe's menu. However, the selection of a much more simplistic and plain menu was offered in this survey, so why did the responders not choose that more over these two? The main reason may be due to the colours used for the menus. The other option gave a very basic and simple design, but was brown with black text. These options have a light beige as the background colour, accompanied with large and dark text in a simple font, all spaced out from one another, with the addition of another colour that fits with the menu's theme.
These are the experiments as a result of the logo making. A replica of the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf was made, using pandan leaves instead of a bean and leaf, a scroll type of logo taken from Dome's scroll for their tagline, and the other four being a result of consulting the previous designs and seeing what works. The hibiscus has also been drawn being the national flower, and a good visual/
